Poster on tax havens

Poster design

Subway station platform with motion-blurred train and a billboard reading: A haven for their money, a nightmare for the rest.

About the project

Ambiance

The Tax Justice Network is an organisation that aims to reprogramme our tax systems and take back control over our taxes. Tax havens are foreign countries with a lower tax rate where wealthy people store their money to avoid paying taxes in their country. The consequence is our government losing money and needing to raise the taxes we need to pay.

Brief

I was assigned with creating a visual statement in the form of a poster in a way that can create a strong, effective, and meaningful message that can be understood by a general audience.

Concept

I wanted to show the difference between the richest people and ordinary people by using buildings. I found that the contrast created by skyscrapers and buildings found on the ground floor to be a very interesting visual to use to represent the topic.

Design process

I chose to use a bird’s eye view of the city to not only show the difference in wealth from the two types of buildings, but to show the difference in power felt. The bird’s eye view and the perspective create a sense of powerlessness by making the elements at the bottom look very small and makes us feel as if we are being looked down on and reinforces the idea that we are inferior.

To reinforce the distance between us and the richest people, I placed the tagline very close to the top and bottom margins. It also echoes the idea of a haven and nightmare, and how the two are represented in culture.
